The Waterloo Region Museum is very different it’s where modern meets Mennonite. It’s very interesting. And the outside of the building is not one for lost color either. (By the way I didn’t take this picture. I was with the kids and couldn’t get that close to the road to take a picture like this. But I wanted yall to see how BIRGHT and COLORFUL it is)
not long after you walk thru the entrance, it opens up to a whole wall of glass windows and behind it is a large train that’s set up to look like it’s going to come right though the glass wall. You head towards the train and you’ll find a door so you can get outside to where all the fun stuff is.
The train was Andrews’s favorite part, what boy doesn’t love trains really? It look a couple tries to get a good picture of the kids standing in front of the train, Amanda was worried the train was going to run her over when I asked her to stand there. (quo the witches voice) “he he he! Remember how you didn’t share your toys?! Get in front of the train! A ha ha ha!” poor kid dose she really think I would DO that? I finally showed her that it wasn’t going to move at all, that it was like a statue and not going anywhere. She felt better and I finally got a good picture of them.
They have it set up so you can walk up into the engine room.
Next to the train is an old fashion stop where you can see what a train masters office was like.
Just follow the train tracks to a path that leads you to vintage homes and village where they have people tell and show just what life was like in the 1914. The kids and I had a really great time there.
The RED house
Amanda got to try hands on this hand pump that brings in water to the sinks. She LOVED it! I think we might need to “down-grade” ours at home, maybe she’ll wash her hands more often.
In the root cellar you’ll find all kinds of big barrels and preservatives. Amanda didn’t like it down there so much, she was kind of scared of it. I was surprised how many “rooms” there were in the root cellar. If I was the kind of person that watched really awful “R” scary movies, I would HATE the root cellar too! You just cant help but think “I could be kept down here for weeks being tortured and no one would know”. It was kind of scary down there.
Here’s one of the dining areas. I just LOVE corner cabinets, they seem so practical to me.
And this was cool, instead of lights being hung down n the middle of a room, they would have a light bow in the wall. And there would be a glass window made so that the light from an oil lantern would light 2 rooms at the same time
Wood burning stove and oven.
Sewing machine. So pretty!
The washroom. Thank Goodness for progression!
This was cool to me. you would walk down a hall, it’s not even doored off or anything from the rest of the house. It’s just this open up space where they placed all their fire wood! On the wall that was also the outside of the house, there was a small window where they would cut the wood and then dump it thru the window. It’s cool
All the bedrooms are upstairs, we even got to go up into the attic, it was really cool to see how many rooms they’ve built into this space.
We saw through the window the horse drawn carriage ride going by.
We went into one of the barns and we got to see a true blue pioneer wagon! HOW COOL!
If you go down the road and over the creek you enter the shops area.
How cute is this?! All these little shops.
The meat market… this was gross. This was a figurine, not the real thing, but still, it was a monster of a pig, it was SO big!
Horseless carriage!
The horse ride goes thru the village. This was taken right outside the church.
Just one of the houses you get to tour. This time of year they have it all decked out for Christmas.
The church was probably my favorite part. They had singers inside and you could hear them from far away. It was SO picturesque! They took requests and Amanda asked them to sing “good king Wenseslas”
Finally we took a horse ride! We had a great time, only the bad side was how people squished us in instead of just waiting for the next ride, we had no room in our seats, but it was still fun.
Before we left we got old fashion post cards and we got to color old fashion salt dough ornaments to take home. It was a very fun day and I was SO proud of how well the kids acted while we were there. It was a great day.
