NY: SAT – the Joseph Smith Frame house

This is a walkway that goes from the small log cabin to the nicer larger Smith home.


I did not know this, but on your walk from one home to the other, along the path the trees open up and you can see the Palmyra temple! I knew there was a temple here but I had no idea it was that close and there it was!

This is the “frame house” or what I kept referring to as the “white house, with the red door”. Isn’t it cute? The cones in front of the door were to keep people from using the front door. We had to go in thru the back door. Did you know that it was Smith Sr’s son who build this place and planed on it being a place for him to live in and take care of his parents in when they were old. But ALL of the Smith family only lived there for a little while. They were rather cheated out of the ownership on the house and that’s when they all went back to live in the log cabin.

We didn’t get to go upstairs where the kids lived but these windows would be to where Joseph Smith Jr the Prophet lived.

Now this house IS authentic, it’s the same wood, brick fireplace, windows and everything. Some of the items inside are authentic but most items are just items from that time area placed in to set the stage.

In those days it was a big deal to have a rock sink like this one. Its drainage water pipe goes directly to the outside of the home.

The Dining room. I tried to just picture all of them sitting around the table together in my mind.

Now this is something very special! (so wake up and pay attention) This is the rock fireplace, in the front room. Joseph was told by the spirit that the mob was coming for the gold plates, so he was told to hide it under the bricks by the fire. These are the same bricks! We (Amanda and I) touched the bricks that Joseph Smith touched! I’ve touched bricks that have touched the golden plates! It was AWESOME! SO COOL!


This is the front room by the fireplace. When the mob came they tore up all the floor boards right in front of the fire place trying to find the gold plates. The floor and some of the wall in this room have been replaced since then.
